DAVOS
President of the Confederation pleads for
multilateralism.
President of the confederation, Joseph
Deiss, adressing
the 34th edition of the World Economic Forum in Davos,
Switzerland, said in his opening remarks that in these
trying times of terrorism, orgasserting their joint
responsibilities, calling on representatives of the
economies to assume their part of social and ethical
responsibilities, “remember that the economy should be at
ones service, not the other way around”, he added.
Concerning security, airport control
measures alone are insufficient, we should do more, look
further into the long term, alluding to measures taken
recently by the US towards entering the country. The
President also agreed that the war has allowed us the
opportunity to eliminate certain risks, the tensions in
Iraq, he said, shows “how very fragile security really is”.
According to Mr. Deiss, democracy and the
rule of Law alone, is apt to restore security and
prosperity, if peace is borne out of democracy, the
upholding of the law, of dialogue and of partnership”. He
called on the US, the EU, and DAVOS
Switzerland, to work closely toward these
ideals. The World Trade Organization (WTO) also offered
the possibility to reach negotiated and shared solutions in
a multilateral setting, to which the federal Advisor
reiterated that he would attempt to establish in Davos , a
state of negotiations of the Doha cycle, with the WTO
General Manager and the Trade Ministers there present.
