Berger President
Oscar Berger was elected President of Guatemala with
54% of the votes of the December 28th elections.
The former Mayor of the Capital,Guatemala City, from
1990 to 1999, won the candidate for center-left Alvaro Colom
(46%) on the second round of the polls to which only 47% of
the five million eligible voters, voted against 58% on the
first round in November.
Lawyer by profession, the new president applied himself
to addressing the unemployment issues in that country,
corruption, to reduce the criminality rate. During his
campaign, he promised to elect a enterprise friendly
government, capable of stimulating the stagnant economy of
that country of fourteen million, by encouraging private
local and foreign investments.
“Everyone
should get to work immediately, we can’t wait another
minute” declared
the 57 year old Oscar Berger. “We will have to apply
ourselves if this country should be competitive, if we
should have more money in our pockets” he
