New President Mikhaïl Saakachvili  

Elected President of Georgia Mikhaïl Saakachvili who was sworn–in on 26 January 2004,announced an ambitious reforms program for the former Soviet Republic still crippled by corruption and an economic crisis.

Mikhaïl Saakachvili won with more than 90% of thevotes, according to Zourab Tchiaberachvili, President of the Central Electorial Commission. The victor of the election, which followed the forced resignation of President Edouard Chevardnadze in November 2003, thanked his constituents, while inviting them to rebuild “a new Georgia”.

Mikhaïl Saakachvili, addressed the crowd gathered there, in Georgian, Russian, English and French. He was called populism by his foes, but reinterated many promises made during his campaign, “fight against corruption, consolidation of power, European integration, normalization of relations with neighboring Russia, resolving the abkhaze problem as well as fight against poverty.While in office, M. Saakachvili wants to modify the constitution in order to create a Prime Minister’s post.
