PROMOTION
OF TRADE AND INVESTMENT IN
SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
Mr
Pierre Pettigrew, Former Minister of International Trade Canada, led
a multi-sectarian trade and investment mission to South Africa,
Nigeria and Senegal, in November 2002, in view of establishing
trade relations between Canadian Businesses and African
partners.
" Canadian businesses can play a primary role in the
economic development of Africa", he said. "By heading a Trade
Mission to Africa I know that we can offer new opportunities
to Canadian Businesses and make of the African countries sound
Trade and Investment partners".
Many African economies are open and prosperous, they
generate greater demands for imported products and services,
of co-enterprises and of Investment. In 2001 bilateral Trade
of merchandise between Canada and Sub-Saharan Africa totaled
1.68 billion dollars, while the export of merchandise to that
region reached 690 M dollars and imports rises to 1billion
dollars.
That
same year, Sub-Saharan Africa was the 19th
market of importance for Canadian goods. In 2000, sales
of service to that region rose to 630M dollars in Canadian
exports.
