THAILAND
2003
The
APEC CEO Summit 2003 fare exceeded expectations
With
over 500 CEO’s representing companies in all 21 APEC economies,
the summit provided a broad forum for the exchange of ideas and
the building of partnership for purpose, progress and prosperity
through free trade, the theme of this year's event. The vision
of all participants is to open up and broaden free trade and
place it on a fair playing field for all.
Therefore,
protection and security were major issues discussed, whether
they be tangible, such as the Smart BEST project to protect
shipping, or intangible, where much attention was given to
protecting Intellectual Property Rights.
Another important issue was the need of both governments
and the private sector to invest in education to prepare people
for the future so they can reach their potential and contribute
to the advancements of their companies and countries so all can
enjoy a quality life.
All
agreed that the CEO’s must work to convince their governments
of the need for them to have the political and good will to once
more come and work together in order to get the World Trade
Organization Doha Round back on track so it can come to a
successful conclusion in 2005.
Outside the actual meeting, CEO’s were given the
opportunity to meet, network, make new friends and develop
relations. Through the friendships, or partnerships, created
here, their businesses can be certainly be enhanced, helping to
not just promote but initiate greater free trade through
improved understanding.
The
third area in which the APEC CEO Summit 2003 succeeded was in
presenting and promoting the Kingdom of Thailand and all it
offers. While sharing much of our rich culture, we have also
been able to demonstrate how advanced, or international, the
country is.
All participants as well as
people around the globe have been kept informed of these events
and seen how capable Thailand is in hosting a major world event.
They also have learned how strong the Thai government's
commitment is to free trade and nurturing relations with not
just its immediate neighbours but with countries on both Pacific
Rims as well as around the world. Finally, this summit has
served as to promote Thailand as one of the world's best and
most exotic tourist destinations as well as investment
opportunity.
